Santa to attend arts and crafts show
SALEM -- Children can tell Santa their secret Christmas wishes when he visits with them from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 8 during the 2018 Holiday Arts and Crafts show to be held in the gymnasium at the Salem Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. Scott Sheldon, building manager, said the arts and craft show will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring at least 20 vendors offering homemade baked goods, crafts, crocheted items and a large selection of Christmas gifts. Among this year's vendors are Bath Fitters and Damsel in Distress (which features defense items for women). Vendor spots are still available. For information on table rental call Sheldon at 330-332-5512. Cost is $25 per table, which includes an 8-foot table and two chairs. Set up will be the night of Dec. 7. Food will be available for purchase at the concession stand which features soup, sandwiches, beverages, etc. Proceeds from the vendor table rental fees and kitchen sales will benefit the Memorial Building which is a United Way Agency.
Salem band fruit sale pickup set Friday
SALEM -- The Salem High School Marching Band's fruit sale pickup will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday in the high school auditorium lobby entrance. Student deliveries will begin at 2:45 p.m. Individuals should use the F. E. Cope Drive main parking lot entrance to access the building. Volunteers will be available throughout the day to assist with loading the fruit into vehicles. To arrange for pickup, call the high school music office at 330-332-8905 Ext. 58355 from 10 a.m. to noon or Booster President Gregg Warner at 330-261-5413 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Orders must be picked up no later than 4:30 p.m.
Sinner offered at Winona Friends Church
WINONA -- The public is invited to the monthly dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Winona Friends Church. The menu offers stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, vegetable, salad, rolls and dessert. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 10 and under.
Red Cross swim lessons planned
SALEM -- The Salem Community Center will host another session of the American Red Cross swim lesson program on Saturdays from Jan. 12 through March 2. Six learn to swim levels are available, along with a Mommy and Me level for infants and their parent. Cost is $70 for non-members and $55 for members. A multiple child discount is available. Tech help offered at Salem Library
SALEM -- Free technology classes and one-on-one instruction are now available at Salem Public Library for the public through a Guiding Ohio Online Grant provided, in part, by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the State Library of Ohio. The program "The Resume" at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 will focus on how to create a well thought out resume. Technology instructor Stephanie Peterson will guide the class with valuable strategies and tips to use in the development of a personal resume which will emphasize the strengths, skills, knowledge and talents of each class member. Democratic Party holiday party set
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Democratic Party will hold its annual holiday party at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 210 E. Lincoln Way. The party will feature a potluck dinner as well as an opportunity to socialize and thank many of the volunteers who worked passionately during this past election. All Democrats are welcome. The party is free but attendees are asked to bring a coverdish or dessert to share and a new, unwrapped toy. The toys collected will be donated to an organization that will distribute them to children in Columbiana County who are in need this holiday season. There is no regular monthly meeting in December.
Today is Giving Tuesday
SALEM -- Giving Tuesday, Nov. 27, kicks off the charitable season when many donors focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, Giving Tuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy. In 2017 more than 2.5 million donors contributed $300 million. The average gift was $120.
United Way Services of Northern Columbiana County is participating in Giving Tuesday and asks everyone in the community to include United Way in their charitable considerations. The current campaign has raised 62.3 percent of the $220,525 goal.

Damascus Elementary helping families
DAMASCUS--Damascus Elementary School is helping out local families with its Holiday Outreach Program.
Cindy Lou Who will visit Damascus Elementary this morning, kicking off the school's Penny War fundraiser. Students are encouraged to donate spare change during this campaign. All the money raised will help out 28 families and 53 children from Damascus Elementary this holiday season. These families will also receive new pajamas, a family Christmas book, a gingerbread house kit, popcorn, cookies and hot cocoa.
Each time a student makes a donation, he or she will receive a heart to add to a Grinch display in the cafeteria. If the students are able to raise $2,000 and add enough hearts to the display, the Grinch will visit school Thursday, Dec. 20 and have a special treat for the students.
Cindy Lou Who will also deliver daily kindness challenges, which will begin Friday. These challenges encourage children to donate pajamas, winter hats and gloves, and socks. To mark the beginning of the challenges, Damascus Elementary School will celebrate Grinch Day. Students and staff will wear Grinch inspired clothing, complete challenges to win Grinch themed prizes and work on Grinch related assignments.

"Once on This Island" auditions set
LISBON -- Stage Left Players will audition for its grade seven to 12 production of "Once on This Island" at the Trinity Playhouse, 234 E. Lincoln Way. Auditions will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Thursday; and 10 to 11 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Saturday.
Directors Kandy Cleland and Jodine Pilmer seek a cast of 22-28 actors/singers and dancers. Rehearsals begin Dec. 10. Interested teens should register online for their one hour audition time slot by visiting the youth players tab at stageleftplayers.org. For more information call 330-831-7249.
